Multi-State Collection Licensing in 2026: What's Changed

Every year brings a fresh round of statutory updates, and 2026 is no exception. Several states have revised surety bond thresholds, adjusted net-worth requirements, and changed how annual reports must be submitted. For agencies operating across multiple jurisdictions, staying ahead of these changes is the difference between uninterrupted operations and an unexpected cease-and-desist.

Bonding and net-worth updates

A handful of states increased minimum surety bond amounts this year, particularly for agencies collecting on higher-balance portfolios. If your bond was written at the previous minimum, your renewal may be rejected until the amount is corrected. We recommend confirming your current bond amount against each state's 2026 schedule well before renewal deadlines.

Reporting and remote-work rules

Post-pandemic remote-work provisions continue to evolve. Some states now require agencies to disclose remote collector locations and maintain documented data-security policies for home offices. Filing these disclosures proactively avoids delays during examination.
